Why It Matters Here

The Fraser Valley Grows Big Trees, and Big Storms

This valley grows some of the tallest residential trees in Canada. Second-growth Douglas firs, western red cedars and hemlocks planted or left standing when neighbourhoods were built are now 25 to 45 metres tall, and many of them stand within falling distance of a house, a garage or a neighbour's fence.

Every fall and winter, Pacific windstorms and atmospheric rivers test those trees. Saturated soil loosens roots, outflow and frontal winds funnel down the valley, and the calls start: cedars snapped at mid-trunk, firs uprooted across driveways, hemlock tops hanging over roofs. The most expensive tree work in the Fraser Valley is the removal that happens after the tree has already picked its own direction.

The cheaper path: a leaning, dying or storm-cracked tree assessed and dealt with in dry weather costs a fraction of an emergency crane lift off a roof in November. If a tree worries you, get eyes on it before storm season.

How it works

  1. Call or send the form. Describe the tree or the job, snap a photo if you can.
  2. Free on-site estimate. We look at the tree, the targets around it, and the access, then quote a firm written price.
  3. The work. Removal, pruning or grinding done by an insured crew, with rigging where space is tight.
  4. Cleanup. Branches chipped, wood bucked or hauled, work area raked. You keep the firewood if you want it.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does tree removal cost in the Fraser Valley?

Most residential tree removals in the Fraser Valley land between $500 and $2,500 per tree, with small ornamentals at the low end and large conifers close to structures at the high end. Very large Douglas firs or cedars that need sectional dismantling over a house can run $3,000 to $6,000 or more. Every job is quoted firm before work starts, and stump grinding is priced separately.

Do I need a permit to remove a tree on my property?

In much of the Fraser Valley, possibly yes. Abbotsford, Chilliwack and the Township of Langley all have tree protection bylaws that can require a permit before removing protected species or trees over a certain size, and rules change, so check with your municipality before cutting. We flag likely permit situations during the estimate so you are not surprised mid-project.

Can you remove a tree that is close to my house or power lines?

Yes for houses, with conditions for power lines. Trees near structures are dismantled in sections and lowered on ropes rather than felled, which is the standard method for tight residential lots. Trees contacting or overhanging BC Hydro conductors must be handled in coordination with BC Hydro, and anything touching a service wire should be reported to them first.

When is the best time of year for tree work?

Removals happen year-round, and structural pruning is often best in late winter while trees are dormant. The practical answer for the Fraser Valley is before storm season: October through February brings the windstorms and atmospheric rivers that turn a leaning cedar into an emergency, so hazardous trees are best dealt with in summer and early fall.

Do you take away the wood and branches?

Yes, full cleanup is part of every quote. Branches are chipped on site, wood is either bucked into rounds and left for firewood at your request or hauled away, and we rake and blow the work area before leaving. If you want free chips for landscaping, just ask.
